Research in bio-plastic applications

Bio-plastics are new types of plastics made from plant materials (cereal, soy, and starch) similar to certain bio-fuels. Bio-plastics are renewable alternatives to petroleum-based products, a limited fossil resource that is currently the main raw material used to make plastics.

Bio-plastics are relatively new and are the subject of extensive research to reduce their manufacturing costs, improve their properties and expand their applications.

Sidel is actively involved in these efforts working alongside other organizations through initiatives like:

  • The BioHub® project backed by France’s Agency for Industrial Innovation and headed by Roquette Frères (France’s first bio-refinery). This project consists of creating new bio-refineries that can transform up to 1.3 million tons of cereal each year into various bio-packages.
  • Studies of existing bio-plastics to incorporate them into production processes.
  • Search for partnerships to create new bio-packaging solutions.
